About us

A café built around the second pot

Food and Tea is the cosy corner café on Marktstraße where shoppers drop their bags, visitors warm up after a tour of the Barockviertel, and locals stay for a second pot. No reservations, no fuss — just pull up a chair.

How we got here

  1. The corner

The shop on the bend of Marktstraße had been a haberdashery for sixty years. We kept the counter, the tiled floor and the brass door handle.

  2. Opening week

We opened on a grey Tuesday with one coffee machine, four cakes and a hand-written board. Eleven people came. Nine of them came back.

  3. The second pot

Free hot-water top-ups started as a kindness to a regular who read all afternoon. It became the thing people tell their friends about.

  4. Now

Fourteen cakes on rotation, a lever machine, Danish-speaking staff on Saturdays, and a window seat that is almost never empty.

Behind the counter

The three you'll see most

Hanna

Owner & baker

In at 5:30 to get the Pflaumenkuchen in the oven. Will absolutely tell you which cake to have.

Yusuf

Head barista

Keeps the lever machine honest and changes the brew-bar single origin every fortnight.

Lise

Weekends & tea

Grew up near Odense, looks after our Danish guests and guards the Darjeeling timer.

What we care about

Small café, straightforward promises

  • Roasted nearby. Our house blend travels 40 km, not 4,000, and we know the people who roast it.
  • Baked today. Everything on the counter was made this morning. We'd rather sell out than freeze it.
  • No upcharge for plant milk. Oat, soy and lactose-free cost the same as cow's milk. Always have.
  • Room for everyone. Prams, dogs, laptops, book clubs, grandparents and toddlers — all at the same time, happily.
Areas we serve

Who finds us, and from where

We're a corner café, so our "service area" is a walk, not a drive. Here's who tends to end up at our tables — including the steady stream of guests from Denmark who make Food and Tea their first stop.

Marktstraße & the shopping streets

Bag-drop corner by the window, prams welcome.

The Dom & cathedral square

Two minutes on foot — the closest pot of tea to the Dom.

Barockviertel

Where tour groups warm up afterwards with a Kännchen.

Altstadt offices & studios

Morning flat whites to take away, from 7:30.

Visitors from Denmark

Danish-speaking staff on Saturdays, and yes — we do hygge.

Neighbourhood regulars

Loyalty cards, name on the cup, usual order remembered.

Pull up a chair

Walk in whenever you like — or ask us to hold a corner table for a bigger group, a birthday Kaffeeklatsch or a quiet morning meeting.
